Proteus – Amazon’s First Fully Autonomous Mobile Robot

Amazon launched Proteus, its first completely autonomous mobile robot earlier in June. It automatically wanders across facilities utilizing the company’s advanced safety, vision, and navigation capabilities. The robot was designed to be self-directed and wander about employees, so it does not have to be restricted to specific places. Here’s all you need to know about this completely autonomous mobile robot.

Meet Proteus, The First Wholly Automated Robot
Amazon has been deploying warehouse robots for more than a decade. These machines allow the organization to receive and process orders more quickly, making the client experience more delightful. However, the most recent Amazon warehouse robot is unique because it is entirely self-contained.
Amazon plans on using Proetus in the outgoing GoCart handling areas of fulfillment and sortation centers. The objective is to automate GoCart handling across the network, reducing the need for individuals to move big things manually.
According to The Verge, when the bot detects a human in the vicinity, it stops traveling, and after the human moves away, the robot resumes its path.
The most recent improvements came ten years after Amazon purchased the robots company Kiva in 2012. The e-commerce company has long stated that its ultimate goal is to create warehousing robots that function alongside humans rather than eliminating them. Unlike some other warehouse bots, Proteus can work with people safely.
Amazon, which has over 52,000 robotic motor units, has disputed rumors that it intends to substitute its human employees, pointing out that it has generated over a million jobs globally.
Other Robots Unveiled by Amazon
Amazon has also developed Amazon Robotics Identification (AR ID), an AI-powered scanning technology that would make it easier to scan items at facilities, which are presently done manually. A video was uploaded to YouTube demonstrating the technology that could eliminate the need for staff to use hand scanners. The company has also announced several more robotic systems.
